Phase I applications due by June 18 for Ag development program

All Henry County farmers and landowners are reminded that the 2013 Phase I Application Period is now open.

From now, through 4 p.m. Tuesday, June 18, the Henry County Extension Office will have the producer applications available.  After June 18, no more applications can be accepted for the 2013 Kentucky Agriculture Development Fund CAIP Program in Henry County.

 Melissa Blankenship needed a change.

Blankenship’s role as publisher of the Henry County Localrequired her to wear many hats as a general manager, reporter and editor. She never had enough time for the important things in her life. At a crossroads with her career, Blankenship made a decision after listening to the question she repeatedly asked herself.

Former Cats revel in first, last year at asbury

Former Wildcat baseball player Jared Payton recently finished his freshman year as a baseball player for Asbury College.

Payton had limited varsity playing time this year but will return next year with a season of experience under his belt.

Payton went 3-for-14 at the plate and started five games. He appeared in four other games. He had two runs scored and one RBI.

The Henry County High School basketball team’s youth basketball camp was a big success this year according to coach Enoch Welch.

Craig and Shannon Bratton saw an opportunity for their daughter when a previous owner left behind a beehive.  The family now has five beehives and looks for the bees and their daughter to continue thriving.

Phase I applications available till Tuesday

The 2013 Phase I Tobacco Funds for Henry County are now available to Henry County Landowners/Farmers through an application/Scoresheet process.  The applications are available now through Tuesday, June 18, at the Henry County Extension Office.  To be included in the funding process, applications must be turned in to the Extension Office by 4 p.m., June 18.

Save money by reducing household food waste

As we scrape uneaten food into the trash can after dinner every night or throw away moldy bread that we just didn’t get around to eating, many of us don’t see that wasted food as wasted money. But in fact, that’s just what it is.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture recently reported that the amount of uneaten food in American homes and restaurants in 2008 was about $390 in wasted food per each U.S. consumer. This is more than the average American spends on food each month. 

How the joes can compete with the pros

I wrote a story about the Henry County Commerce Park and economic development a few issues ago.

Budget restraints continuously challenge small towns and stand as one of the greater hurdles on the development obstacle course. I heard from many sources that a small budget limited the county, the towns and more widely local merchants from drawing business here.

Peyton competes at Junior PGA

MacKenzie Peyton competed in the PGA Junior Series tour event at Kearney Hills Golf Links in Lexington on June 4-6.

More than 50 girls from across the country competed in the 54-hole event.

Peyton finished tied for 12th place after shooting 77-69-82 for a 228 total.

Maddie Hamilton of Louisville and Jessica Porvasnik of Hinckley, Ohio, were tied for first place at 213 after completing the third round.

Hamilton, who plays for Sacred Heart and is a regional rival of Peyton, won in a three-hole playoff.
