    We hope you had a wonderful holiday!  2011 is off to a great start here at the library.

    January is National Blood Donation Month. The need is great, so stop by the library to donate from 2-6 p.m., on Thursday, Jan. 6.
    Story time is back on Mondays at 10 a.m., featuring books, songs and crafts! 

    Lego Club will meet from 1-2:30 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 8.
    If you’re 13-18 years old, you won’t want to miss Teen Open Gaming from 6:30 to 8 p.m., on Thursday, Jan. 13

  • Master Cattleman class starts soon

    All folks interested in enrolling in the 2011 Master Cattleman Class are encouraged to call the Henry County Extension Office at 845-2811.  This is for virtually everyone in the cattle industry, primarily beef cattle, regardless of experience.  We are putting the class together in the next couple of weeks, and the first session of the year will be at 5:30 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 20, at the Shelby County Extension Office.

  • Sewing club is ready to get started

    If you have an interest in learning about fabrics, patterns, and sewing machines then the 4-H Sewing Club is for you.  The advanced club will be meeting from 3:30 to 5 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 27, at the Henry County Cooperative Extension Service.  The advanced club is for members who have sewn with the group last year.  The beginning group will start on the following Monday, Jan. 31, at the same time and place.

  • Small Steps to Health & Wealth...

    Just in time to rescue failed New Year’s resolutions to improve health and personal finances, the Cooperative Extension system is launching an online Small Steps to Health and Wealth™ Challenge called “Winter 2011 SSHW Challenge.”  This free six-week program, open to anyone who enrolls online, runs from Sunday, Jan. 16, through Saturday, Feb. 26.  Prizes will be awarded for participants who report the highest point totals.

    BIRTH: Ella Kyon Russell

    Mr. and Mrs. Shawn Russell of Lexington announce the birth of their daughter, Ella Kyon Russell, born Nov. 15, 2010, at Central Baptist in Lexington. She weighed 6 pounds 7 ounces and was 18 ½ inches long.
    Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Mike Burchett, Paintsville and Mr. and Mrs. Sam Russell, Smithfield.

  • Garnet Brown

    Garnet O. Brown, age 84 of Graefenburg, died Sunday, Dec. 26, 2010, at Bradford Square Care and Rehabilitation Center in Frankfort. He was the son of the late Leonard Cranford and Hallie Mae Engles Brown. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

    He is survived by his wife, Lura Edith Brown; three daughters: Garnetta Faye Barnett, Anderson County; Linda Antoinette Sanford, Pleasureville; Debra Kaye Jennings, Irvine; and his son, Leonard Carrell Brown.

    Teamwork is an important skill to learn.  Fourth and fifth graders throughout the county have been developing those skills this past month in 4-H school enrichment clubs.

  • Fire safety measures can save your...

    One structure fire was reported every 66 seconds in the U.S. in 2009, according to the National Fire Protection Association. To maintain a fire-safe home and keep your family safe this winter, follow these tips.
    If you are using kerosene heaters, be sure your heater is in good working condition. Clean off the carbon that may have built up around the exhaust parts. Be sure the heater has an emergency shut off in case the heater gets tipped over.

  • Women in Ag conference set for Feb...

     Agriculture conference sponsored by Purdue in February will help  participants build their businesses and become stronger advocates for agriculture. The conference will be Feb. 24-25 at the Sheraton Louisville Riverside Hotel, 700 W. Riverside Dr., Jeffersonville, Indiana.
    “We hope the ladies gain information in areas that are important to the success of their agriculture enterprises, network with others and leave motivated to return to their farm or agribusiness,” said Purdue University Extension educator Elysia Berry, an organizer of the conference.

Lessons are held for beginners from 6 to 7 p.m.  and advanced lessons follow from 7 to 8 p.m. There is a fee of $20 per year.     50th Anniversary

    Bobby and Barbara Taylor will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on Dec. 25. They have three children, Brenda King, Janis Haynes and Brian Taylor. They also have five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

    They have worked to improve our lifestyle through new cooking ideas and recipes, community projects and cultural advancement, and this year the Henry County Homemakers will celebrate their 73rd year and on Sunday, Jan. 23, from 2-4 p.m., we will be recognizing Extension Leaders from Homemakers, 4-H and Agriculture at a special reception to be held at Twin Oaks Assisted Living here in New Castle.

  • Timely tips for cattlemen

    Here are a few tips from the UK Beef Cattle group for management of the beef herd at this time of year. 
    For spring calvers, body condition is important, so plan an adequate winter program for cows to be at least body condition score 5 (carrying enough flesh to cover the ribs) before the calving and breeding season.  This will help them to breed early in the spring.  Thin cows should be fed to regain body condition prior to winter.
