I was relaxing over coffee the other morning, fondly gazing at the pictures of our five children that sit on top of my kitchen cabinets when suddenly, for no obvious reason, my attention shifted. Delicate little cobwebs lacing from picture to picture came into my focus.  I hadn’t noticed them before, but like an optical illusion, the pictures receded and the little filaments draping the frames - and, yes, also hanging from the ceiling - jumped out at me.  Thus can one’s peace of mind be so easily disturbed.

The full scale exercise at Safety-Kleen on Oct. 4 was very successful and involved all emergency personnel including Fire/Rescue departments, EMS, Sheriff’s Office, KSP and Coroner’s office with employees of the plant acting as victims of an explosion. We also had an excellent exercise at Homestead Nursing Center on June 21 which simulated a boiler explosion and also involved Fire/Rescue, EMS and Henry County Sheriff’s office in the evacuation of residents and staff of that facility. Both events had good media coverage by the Henry County Local.

It started kind of innocently.

I was rolling right along in the kitchen one Thanksgiving a couple of years ago, and was working on the pumpkin pie.

I was putting the filling and a special ingredient in the blender when Derek walked in.

“Why are you putting tofu in the pumpkin pie???” he asked, more than a little repulsed by the concept. You see, he doesn’t care much for tofu, while I love it.

“Trust me.”

You see, as a sufferer of IBS (I’ll let you look that up), I have trouble with dairy products - sometimes.

In less than seven weeks, the General Assembly will meet for what will be the fifth odd-year regular session since voters made them possible in 2000.

Next month will mark the second anniversary of Fiscal Court purchasing the land for our new Recreational and Services Park.  About that same time a group of 20 dedicated citizens representing various interests including youth sports, our schools, our seniors, service agencies, and local government formulated a plan for which to develop the park.  It is my pleasure to report to you that a significant portion of that plan has been implemented or is in progress.

Recently I was in the checkout line at Kohl’s when I overheard the salesgirl ask a woman ahead of me if she would like to be put on their e-mail list. “Sorry,” the lady said. “I’m computer illiterate.” With a vague hint of superiority, I thought, “Aha! Someone lower on the old totem pole than me!” The truth is, while I can e-mail –I am not much more advanced on the computer than this woman. About all I can do is log on and off.

To the resident District One — on Nov. 5, Governor Steve Beshear appointed me as Magistrate for District 1 in Henry County. This appointment is for the remaining term of Wayne Gunnell, who resigned as magistrate to take a new position with state government in Frankfort. I would like to thank Mr. Gunnell for his decades of public service to Henry County, and wish him the best in his new position.

I just returned from taking matters into my own hand.  I did so by exercising my right and privilege to vote as a citizen.  I can’t remember a time when I didn’t understand the importance of voting.  As a child, I observed my parents sorting through the various campaign promises and platforms of local, state, and national office seekers.  With them, I watched TV coverage of the national conventions and read newspaper and magazine articles about the candidates.  I even plastered my bicycle with bumper stickers in support of my choice for president. 

First and foremost we want to thank Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior for making this toy run a big success.  We serve an awesome God.
