While sitting at his dining room table in June 2005, Larry Jeffries emerged from a back room with a small stack of papers that had listed some of his athletic achievements, along with a few old clippings from newspapers that had followed Jeffries during his young, more athletic days 40 years earlier.

In all three games at the Lady Spartan Invitational last week, the Henry County girls’ basketball team started out slow in the opening minutes before progressing throughout.

The slow starts, which puzzled head coach Todd Gilley, led to two loses and one win at the invitational hosted by Sayre High School to open the Ladycats’ season at 1-2.

For a majority of the Eminence girls’ basketball team, they spent the fall running mile after mile for the high school’s cross-country team. Now, the Lady Warriors hope that extra endurance translates to the basketball court this winter.

After his first two seasons on the sideline, head coach Carter Martin is trying to turn his program from a group of young players trying to get over the hump to a more balanced team that doesn’t rely on just a couple of standout performers.

With the noise from the crowd packed inside Toyota Stadium blaring in the background, sophomore Craig Vaughn jogged out onto the field. It was his third season at Georgetown College — he red-shirted his first year in the program — and this kick return against Cumberland University would mark his first action in an actual varsity game.
