    Last year’s Henry County High School football team celebrated one of its best seasons on record with an impressive 9-4 mark, regular-season and post-season district championships, and the school’s first two playoff game victories.

    A year later, the Wildcats return a majority of their top players, add a few new faces and have a new set of goals that includes surpassing last season’s historic run.

  • Fall Sports Preview: Runners...

    With the first meet less than three weeks away, the Henry County cross country team is increasing their mileage and tempo to make sure they are ready to toe the starting line at the Shelby County Invitational Sept. 6.

    The squad, which started practice July 15 with a low turnout before growing in size as the school year approached, has been training at Harry Hill Park in preparation for fall races.

  • Fall sports ready to start back...

    As I rub my chin in puzzlement, I can’t help but think: is it already that time of the year again? Time for the high school football teams from across the state to kick off their seasons; time for the volleyball squads to work on that perfect bump-set-spike routine; time for the golfers to get out the driver; time for the cross country runners to increase their mileage before toeing the starting line; and time for the soccer players to put more oomph in their kicks.

  • Fall Sports Preview: Boys ready...

    Becoming the first high school boys’ soccer team from the county will be no easy task, but one the Wildcats are up for as the season fast approaches.

    Following in the footsteps of the girls’ soccer team — which started last fall with junior varsity and continous this season with varsity — the boys will field a high school squad for the first time at Henry County High School. Each of these players are diving head first into varsity action, and are making history along the way.

    When Steve Dent came out for the first day of golf practice July 15, he noticed his players were shooting well — way better than the same time last year, Dent said. Apparently, the players took it upon themselves to improve their game in the off-season, which is already showing in early-season matches.

  • Fall Sports Preview: EHS XC team...

    During the first week of practice in mid-July, coach Scott McClamroch was a little worried about the upcoming cross country season — his turnout was lower than expected and some of his top runners were not in the shape he was hoping they would be in. But by the end of the month, after the long-distance specialists started trickling in as school drew near, McClamroch was pleased with the numbers and the direction his program was headed.

    The Henry County girls’ golf team will juggle its schedule this year to go against more stiff competition, be eligible to play in the 8th Region All “A” Classic for the first time and make the switch from the 6th Region to the 5th Region in post-season action. But the squad will basically be the exact same team from last year’s recording-breaking group, just a year wiser, a year stronger and a year better.
