Beginning with her first putter at the age of one, Mackenzie Peyton has always been around the game of golf. She received the putter from her grandfather, Willie Peyton, on her first birthday, was a regular on the greens by the age of two, and was playing a full nine holes by the age of five. Now, at the ripe old age of 11, Peyton already has played three years on Henry County High School girls’ golf team and, as an upcoming sixth grader, she’s making a name for herself against others her age from around the country.

Rain and lightning might have dampened and delayed the Kentucky State Water Ski Championships over the weekend, but the unstable weather conditions could not stop the best statewide skiers from topping the all-time Kentucky list. After the two-day event, held at Stillwater Lake in Eminence, 33 different skiers were crowned state champions, and seven different state records were set. The competition, sanctioned by the American Water Ski Association, was delayed twice on Saturday — once due to heavy rain and once for a bolt of lightning spotted in the area.

At the end of another long day of cycling last Monday night, with hundreds of miles behind them and hundreds more still ahead, Matthew Case and Eric Brewer decided to call it a night. The duo, in a far place away from home as college students from Utah, were in New Castle and needed a place to stay when they spotted the Henry County Local. Bingo. There — hidden behind a building that used to be a restaurant before the Local relocated there in the mid-1970s — they gave their tired legs a needed break, unloaded their bikes, put up a tent and rested for the night.

The best water skiers in the state will converge on Stillwater Lake in Eminence this weekend to vie for top spots in the annual Kentucky State Water Ski Championships. The last two times Stillwater played host to the state championships, sanctioned by the American Water Ski Association, were in 2005 and 2002. Stillwater opened the statewide competitions June 14 with a slalom-only event that attracted 18 skiers, which was down more than 20 percent from previous years.
