  • Eminence opens state-wide water...

    Under near-perfect weather, Eminence’s Stillwater Lake hosted Kentucky’s first water ski competition of the season Saturday with a smaller turnout than normal.

    Just 18 skiers competed in the slalom-only event, which was down more than 20 percent from previous years. But there were still plenty of solid performances for the first competition of the season.

  • Sometimes, the Internet isn...

    Don’t get me wrong, I love the Internet... usually. There’s nothing like a quick find on Google, a funny video on YouTube or a glance from last night’s scores on ESPN.

    Between writing stories Monday afternoon, I spent my time on the Internet keeping up with the Tiger Woods-Rocco Mediate showdown on the golf course, which started out in a playoff and, as I’m writing these words, is finishing up in a thrilling, sudden death. The Internet is a very convenient tool that makes most of our lives very, very easy, and enjoyable at times.

  • Dewayne Douglas resigns as...

    After two seasons on the sideline for the young and inexperienced Eminence softball team, Dewayne Douglas has decided to step down from his position as the head coach. Douglas, who coached the team for six years during the 1990s before making his return in 2007, officially resigned shortly after the final game in mid-May.

    During his two seasons, Eminence had 2-14 and 1-14 records, and lost in the opening round of the 30th District tournament both years. Douglas had just too much on his plate, he said of his decision to back away.

  • Eminence hosts annual Spring...

    After a season full of ups and downs, Eminence High School hosted its annual Spring Sports Banquet at the Eminence Community Life Center last Monday night. Among those honored were the baseball, softball and track teams.

    The head coaches gave out seven awards each — academic, leadership and community, along with four coach-chosen awards — and also announced lettermen winners, recognized each player and gave their appreciation to the seniors who recently ended their high school athletic careers.

  • Roberts, Wilson named All-8th...

    When Kentucky’s all-region baseball teams were announced last Wednesday morning in the Courier-Journal, two Henry County High School players were named among those in the 8th Region. Ben Roberts, a senior, and Tommy Wilson, a junior, were both named to the squad, which included the top 22 players in the 16-team region.

    The Henry County football team is coming off one of its best seasons in recent memory with an impressive 9-4 record, a trip to the Kentucky State Playoffs and a school-best quarterfinals appearance in Class 3A. Now, the Cats’ accomplishments aren’t going unnoticed.

    When Austin Hunsaker took over Henry County’s head coaching position during the middle of conditioning this past winter, his main objective was to “create a team atmosphere” between the coaches on the sideline and players on the field. In the end, after a roller-coaster ride that saw the Wildcats celebrate one of their best seasons in recent memory — Hunsaker achieved his top objective, and more.

  • Another year, and no Triple Crown

    On a day that I anticipated history being made with horse racing’s first Triple Crown winner in three decades, I was glued to the television Saturday with the anticipation of Big Brown dusting the field in route to an easy, unchallenged victory.

    I envisioned my hands raised in the air as Brown galloped into the winner’s circle.

  • Fischer leads Cats at state meet...

    Out of the four Henry County athletes that participated in the Class 2A Kentucky State Track and Field Championships at the University of Louisville’s Cardinal Park over the weekend, it was eighth-grader Cassey Fischer that came through with the top performance for the Cats.
