BBB tips on the Facebook security breach

-A A +A

Are you a Facebook user? Are you one of the 50 million people recently affected by the security breach? If yes, what do you do now? BBB serving Louisville, Southern Indiana, and Western Kentucky provides the following information and tips regarding this data breach.

In July 2017, a vulnerability was introduced on Facebook. In September 2018, Facebook saw an increase in unusual activity and learned about this vulnerability that enabled attackers to steal Facebook access tokens. Access tokens are like a “digital key” to allow you to stay logged in to Facebook without having to re-enter your password each time. At this time, Facebook says private messages and credit card information do not appear to be affected, though this could change as the investigation continues. While they are still unsure of who hacked the social media site, the FBI is investigating the matter.

Due to the severity of this breach, Facebook reset access tokens to all affected users. Many users have been logged out of their account and were notified by a message in their News Feed explaining the situation.

How to protect your social media accounts:

  • Change your password and use two-factor authentication. Now is a good time to change your password. Never share it with anyone and try to use different passwords for different accounts. Use two-factor authentication or a security code whenever possible.
  • Log out. When you are using a shared computer, make sure to log out of all your accounts.
  • Check your privacy settings. Look over your privacy settings and what you are sharing with the public. Social media sites like Facebook change these settings and features often, so check over them if you haven’t done so recently.
  • Check your third-party apps. If you’ve used your Facebook login on other websites (dating apps, games, streaming services, etc.), now is the time to make sure these are sites you still use. You can check these by visiting your Facebook Settings page under the tab “Apps and Websites.”
