-A A +A
By Greg Woods

The second and third innings told the story for the Warriors as Williamstown plated 10 runs in the second, including a grand slam home run, and six in the third to put the first round All A Classic regional tournament game away early.

“We had a couple of errors with one out that would have gotten us out the inning before the grand slam,” Coach Jay Virgin said. “Six of those ten runs were unearned because we should have had three outs before they crossed the plate.”

The Warriors did show some better offense as the game progressed as they scored three runs in the third and three in the seventh to close the gap to eleven. The Warriors totaled six hits in the game and reached base a season-high 16 times.

Austin Jones led the way with two hits and a walk and scored one run and Travis Bell contributed two singles and a run scored along with a couple of RBIs. Bell also struck out the side in the fifth inning when he came on to relieve Jones, who started the game for the Warriors. Bell was named to the all-torunament team for the Warriors.

Virgin was not pleased with his team’s attitude when things were going bad. He was pleased that the team bounced back eventually.

“As soon as something went wrong the heads went down and the body language got negative,” Virgin said. “It went on for about an inning and a half. To their credit they started to pull themselves out of in the bottom of the third. I was pleased that they snapped out of it a little. These guys have to understand that there is no clock in baseball and you are never out of it until the last out is recorded.”

“We have to change attitudes here. Once something goes wrong we have to put it out of our minds. We have to learn how to have a winning attitude and believe we can come back.”

The Warriors fell to 0-6 on the season while Williamstown improved to 1-11.

Williamstown fell to Carroll County in the second round of the tournament, which was hosted by Eminence. The Panthers went on to defeat Walton-Verona in the final and will represent the 8th Region in the All A Classic state tournament.
