Letters to the Editor for Sept. 13, 2017

-A A +A

Writer hates to see the mill moving away

Is the county just shrinking away?

Yes, somewhat. The Smithfield mill is being torn down and moved away from Henry County.  To those of us who have grown up in the county and the Smithfield area, it is almost heartbreaking to see it being torn down.

That old mill has stood as the face of Smithfield since 1870 when it began as a grist mill. According to historians, the mill produced as much as 6,000 pounds of flour and wheat daily which were distributed in 13 counties.
