Message to thieves

-A A +A

To the thieves who took the roll of wire mesh with straw, used to cover graves when grass seed has been sown, please consider this:  Although you will consider your act as not a major theft, maybe you did it on a dare, maybe you had new grass seed you needed to cover, maybe you took it for the heck of it, but it is of major importance to us the Board of Directors of the Defoe Cemetery.

We don’t have a lot of money to spend to try to keep our cemetery looking good, if you knew the value of that item, you would probably consider it petty theft. In terms of cost, it probably is.  However, to those of us who serve without pay on the Board of Directors, listen to the people of the community with ideas that they would like to see implemented and try to do so on a shoe string budget, it is NOT petty theft.

If you had family and loved ones buried here, it is hallowed ground and you would want as badly as we do to keep our cemetery beautiful.  You would probably be as angry and upset as I am at this behavior.

So instead of stealing from the cemetery, why don’t you come help us on May 16. 2015, at 9:30 a.m. as we have a “clean up” day to make our cemetery as beautiful as we can for the upcoming Memorial Day.  You can apologize then, and then pitch in to help.

This theft happened this past Saturday night.  I will be contacting the law enforcement authorities to alert them to this theft. Maybe the next time you enter this cemetery, you need to look around to see if you can find the cameras that are trained on your vehicle and license plate.
