Rabbit Hole supporters start petition

-A A +A
By Collin Overton

A few days after Rabbit Hole Distilling nixed its plans for building a warehouse in Henry County, residents worked to make them reconsider.  A petition to show support for the distillery has been making the rounds at local businesses, said Rick Foree of Smithfield. Foree posted on Facebook around noon on Wednesday about the petition and his conversation with Rabbit Hole founder Kaveh Zamanian.  Zamanian told Foree earlier that morning that Rabbit Hole would consider reapplying for a permit next month if enough residents petitioned to show support. Zamanian said he’d gotten numerous calls and messages from other residents over the past couple days, who told him the majority of the county wanted them there.  “We chose Henry County for a reason,” Zamanian said, citing natural beauty as a major reason for choosing the property. If Rabbit Hole were to reconsider, they would seek the same property, he said.  Residents argue that the distillery would bring much-needed economic benefits to the county, such as tax revenue for schools, 20 to 25 jobs and an outlet for farmers to sell corn and grain. Foree said Rabbit Hole would “provide” for the county, not “hurt” it, as many feared.  “I want to see this county grow,” Foree said.  The decision to reapply isn’t guaranteed. Such a decision would depend on the company’s own timeline, Zamanian said. He and other company leaders are still considering sites in other neighboring counties to build their warehouse.  “This is in the residents’ court,” Zamanian said.  Petitions are being delivered to a handful of local businesses, including Keeper’s Seafood Restaurant, First & Last Liquors and Coombs Tax Service. Foree has started a Facebook page, Supporters of Rabbit Hole Distilling in Henry County KY, to draw supporters and post updates on the petition. The page had over 780 followers as of noon Thursday.  Those who want to sign the petition must be at least 18 years old and a Henry County resident. All petition locations are listed on the Supporters of Rabbit Hole Distilling in Henry County KY page.  Two residents, who were initially in opposition to the distillery setting up on the property, wished not to be quoted.
