  • Saluting youth sports coaches

Today marks one month on the new job for me. I have to say that it has been an awesome experience, so far. My co-workers have made the transition from education to journalism easier. They have been great in helping me figure this gig out.

  • Living the wild life

Joe Guthrie grew up in Drennon Springs living like many rural kids do. He hunted, fished and hiked on and around his parents’ farm and along Drennon Creek.

That rural background led him to dedicate his life to preserving wilderness areas and the species that inhabit them.

In his youth, Guthrie played a variety of sports including football, baseball, track and cross-country.

Victoria Michels will be the next head cross country coach at Henry County High School.

  • One is the loneliest number

Scoring is up in the world’s most popular tournament this year. There have been stunning moves and scores, plus drama on and off the playing surface. I have watched as much of it as I can but work gets in the way and I’ve missed some great games.
No, I’m not talking NBA playoffs.

  • Roberts went from 'nobody...

During the 30th District girls’ basketball final in 1993, two rare things happened.
The first was Henry County and Eminence basketball fans cheering a team on together. They chanted in unison, over and over again, “We are somebody!”
The other was the first, and only, district title for the Lady Warriors, which came in a win over the Shelby County Lady Rockets.
Fans from both Henry County and Eminence were ecstatic to see the David and Goliath moment.

  • Aspiring pros on tour

Henry County has a couple of 10-year-old golfers who are playing some serious golf this summer. Isaac Klempner and Alex Hadden are playing in golf tournaments on two different junior tours. So far they have competed in 20 of the one-day tournaments and combined for 14 first and second place finishes.

They have played mainly on the Musselman-Dunne Junior Golf tour.  Alex has played four events on the Pepsi Junior Golf Tour and Isaac has competed in one Pepsi event.

The two youngsters are unusually focused and determined for their age.

  • Fishing trip turns into big mix-...

Two years ago my father-in-law Chuck bought a used johnboat and the small outboard engine that went with it.

We couldn’t wait to get out on Taylorsville Lake in it; he had lived on the lake for a while and we had talked about a guys’ day out on the lake for a while. We finally set a date during spring break in early April.

Improvement is the theme for this year’s EHS baseball and softball teams. The coaches believe that they made significant strides in making the programs more competitive this year. Both baseball coach Mark Payton and softball coach Bill Covington feel the future is looking brighter as they consider what took place this year.

When Chet Ervin graduated from Henry County High School, he was, undeniably, the best kicker in team history.
Ervin parlayed his ability to kick a football into a career as a sports agent.
