What was a hobby and evolved into an online homecrafts outlet has become a retail business in Campbellsburg. Last month, Amber Smith and husband Billy Smith opened Small Town Designs and More in the Campbellsburg Main Street town center across the walkway from Campbellsburg Super Market.
The business products already were available through Facebook and Etsy, but the bricks and mortar presence gives those in need of some homecraft design work the opportunity to eyeball a variety of designs for banners, apparel, yard signs, window letters, vehicle letters, license plates, vinyl decals, tumblers, metal signs and doors.
“Locally, they can come in,” said Amber Smith. “I have some designs printed out, but if they have something like a picture they want to put on something, I pretty much customize anything.”
She uses Cricuit cutting plotters for pattern design, adding that using multiple Cricuit machines requires her to identify individual machines separately: “When you Bluetooth them, they all have different numbers, so I have to know which one I’m working on.”
The shop also employs sublimation heat press machines with attachments to transfer patterns to whatever type of material is in use, be it hats, tumblers or T-shirts.
Some templates created by Amber Smith are used by her mother Susie Sutherland for engravings in the shop, and Billy Smith has also tried his hand at engraving, etching the 1131 Campbellsburg Fire and Rescue fire engine that he drives onto a jar.
Both Smiths are volunteers with the Campbellsburg fire department, which is located at the edge of the Main Street city center. Campbellsburg City Hall also is located in the city center, and Small Town Designs and More has produced decals for the city that serve as the permits for driving golf carts in permitted areas within city limits.
